Presented by Michael W. McMullen
100. SPIN CHAIN & EXCHANGE THE GEARS: Starting formation - Ocean Waves (right-hand, for ease of description)
TIMING - 26
Start as in a normal Spin Chain the Gears -- Ends and adjacent centers turn ½, new centers turn 3/4, while the ends U-Turn Back, and the very two centers of the wave Trade. All form two left-hand stars (but before turning them, the out-facing point should raise a hand, indicating "follow me" -- they will be the "leaders of the exchange") and turn the stars 3/4. The "leaders of the exchange" will now lead the star out to the right, around the outside of the other star, like an S pattern, then into a momentary column of four, single file through the sides position. The first three dancers in the momentary column Quarterright-face, as the fourth dancer does a Quarter left-face, and the original"leader of the exchange" runs right, forming two parallel right-hand ocean waves(at the sides of the square, if started from a Box 1-4).
STYLING: Same as in Spin Chain The Gears
Prior to teaching Spin Chain and Exchange the Gears, the caller should have taught Spin Chain the Gears and all 3 Diamond Calls.
Start as in a normal Spin Chain the Gears -- Ends and adjacent centers turn ½, new centers turn 3/4, while the ends U-Turn Back, and the very two centers of the wave Trade. All form two stars. STOP.
Tell the dancers that we have 2 gears or stars or diamonds, one on each side of the set. Dancer facing out in each gear/star/diamond put your hand up, you get to lead the parade. (If the dancers have problems figuring out who this dancers is tell them that it is the dancer on each side who has his back towards the flagpole center of the square.) First turn each gear/star/diamond 3/4 or Diamond Circulate 3 times and stop. Dancer with your hand up, this is where you get to lead the parade. We are now going to do 3 more Diamond Circulates only we are going to Circulate to the diamond on the other side of the square. As we move to the other Diamond to avoid crashing into the people who are leaving that diamond and Circulating to your diamond you stay to the outside, the Right Shoulder Rule does NOT apply. You need to work to spots on the floor as the diamonds will disappear on the 1st and 2nd Circulates and reappear on the 3 Circulate. Parade Leaders POINT to where you will go on your first Circulate to the other gear/star/diamond. EVERYBODY now do 1 Diamond Circulate and Stop. Parade Leaders POINT to where you will go on your next Circulate. EVERYBODY now do the 2nd Diamond Circulate and Stop. Parade Leaders POINT to where you will go for the 3rd Diamond Circulate Circulate. EVERYBODY now do the 3rd Diamond Circulate and Stop. Notice so far only the first 3 people in each gear/star/diamond have moved to the other gear/star/diamond, when we finish the call the 4th dancer has toend in the other diamond too. To do that we are going to Flip the Diamonds and the 4th dancer in each parade is going to Diamond Circulate over to the other diamond. Before we can Flip the Diamonds we need to determine who are the points and centers of the diamonds. Notice we have a line of 4 dancers down the middle of the set, it is a 2-FL. You 4 are the centers of the diamonds, you are the ones who do the diamond circulate to become the ends of the waves, while the other dancers flip in to become the centers of the waves. Dancer #4, remember you have to finish with the other 3 dancers from your parade. All Flip the Diamond. Dancer #4 did you remember to Circulate to the far diamond?
Now we are going to do it again SLOWLY and hopefully smoothly with no stops.
Method #2>
Start as in a normal Spin Chain the Gears -- Ends and adjacent centers turn ½, new centers turn 3/4, while the ends U-Turn Back, and the very two centers of the wave Trade. All form two stars. STOP.
Tell the dancers that we have 2 gears or stars or diamonds, one on each side of the set. Dancer facing out in each gear/star/diamond may put theirhand up for identification. That person is the leader or the parade. (If the dancers have problems figuring out who this dancers is tell them that it is the dancer on each side who has his back towards the flagpole center of the square.) First turn each gear/star/diamond 3/4 or Diamond Circulate 3 times and stop. The Dancer with the hand up, is Dancer #1, and will lead the parade. Lead the 3 dancers behind you to the other side of the set. Walk straight ahead as if doing 2 column circulates everyone in that star follow the one in front. All 4 will end in a single file column of 4 and there will be parallel columns of 4 dancers one on each side of the set. To avoid crashing into the people who are leaving that diamond and Circulating to your diamond stay to the outside, the Right Shoulder Rule does NOT apply. Ask Dancer #1 on each side to POINT to where they will go on the first Circulate to the other gear/star/diamond . EVERYONE will now do 1 Diamond Circulate and Stop. Dancer #1 POINT to where the next Circulate spot is. EVERYBODY now do the 2nd Diamond Circulate and Stop. Dancer #1 POINT to where the first Column Circulate is. EVERYBODY now Circulate 1 spot and Stop. Dancer #1 POINT to where the second Column Circulate is. EVERYBODY now Circulate 1 spot and Stop. Everybody should have now crossed over to the other side of the square and there are 2 columns of4 dancers. For Dancers 1, 2, & 3 in each column the next part is to turn 1/4 to the Right, while dancer number 4 turns 1/4 to the left. Dancer #1 run around the dancers beside you. Ends in parallel waves.
