83. RELAY THE DEUCEY: Starting formation - Parallel Ocean Waves. All Circulates in this definition refer to the Original Circulate path established by the ends of the original ocean waves. No dancer ever stops moving during this call; the pauses written into the definition (i.e., the action describes as "half-circulate") are there for clarity of description and for teaching purposes only. each end and the adjacent center dancer turn one-half (180 degrees). The new centers of each ocean wave turn three-quarters (270 degrees), while the other half-circulate, forming a six-person wave and two lonesome dancers. The wave of six, working as 3 pairs, turn 1/2, while the others half-circulate. In the wave, the center 4 turn 1/2, while the other four dancers half-circulate. The wave of 6, again working as 3 pairs, turns 1/2, while the others half-circulate. Finally, the center 4 of the wave turn 3/4 (becoming the centers of the new waves), while the outside 4 half-circulate to become the ends of the final waves.

Teaching Hints:
When teaching this call, use a movement - stop, movement - stop action. This will give the dancers a chance to see and think about what they are doing and will do next. Different callers have different ways of helping the dancers to learn this movement. The caller is encouraged to develop one or more or use the ones listed below. Some callers tell the dancers that this is a modified Spin the Top with two Grand Swing Thrus then finish with another modified Spin the Top. The Spin the Top is modified in that the end dancer Circulates in an Ocean Wave type Circulate and only 1/2 way each time.
Other callers, after establishing the Ocean Wave, have the dancers to turn 1/2, then the centers turn 3/4. At this point the caller will explain to the dancers that the object is to get into the Wave. But they can only get into the Wave when they come to the end of the Wave. Once they have gone through the wave and are at the end they must leave and continue Circulating on the Outside until the movement is completed.
Put the dancers into an Ocean Wave. Tell the center dancers to turn the adjacent outside dancer 1/2. At this point it is a good idea to tell the new outside dancers that they will start walking or Circulating as they would in any Ocean Wave, BUT they will only Circulate 1/2 way to the next position.
Have the center dancers of the Ocean Wave turn 3/4 by the center hands. Tell the end dancer of the old Wave that they will Circulate to the end of the new 6 person wave where they will join hands with that dancer. The end dancer of the old wave will now Circulate 1/2 to the next position. Next have the six dancers in the Wave turn 1/2. If those that turned 3/4 ask which hand, tell them that is the hand that they didn’t turn with before. Now tell those in the Wave to turn by the other hand 1/2.
Draw their attention that the very end dancer of the 6 dancer wave could not do this last turn. Now is the time to tell them that they have come to the end of the Wave and must leave by Circulating around the outside. The other dancers on the outside will now Circulate to the end of the 6 person Wave where they will join hands with the other dancer. In the 6 person Wave they will turn 1/2. Those that can will turn 3/4 by the other hand. The dancers out of the Wave will Circulate to form new four dancer Waves.
If done from a Right hand Wave, the sequence is: Turn 1/2 Right, Centers Turn 3/4 Left, End dancers Circulate 1/2, Turn 1/2 Right, Turn 1/2 Left, End dancer move off, Other dancer join the Wave. Turn 1/2 right, Turn 3/4 Left. Other dancers Circulate 1/2 to form Waves.
Some dancers do not realize when the call is finished. If done from a Right hand Wave with the girls in the center, the caller can tell them that the next time they join hands with a girl turn 3/4 and the movement is finished.
The caller MUST Circulate the dancers in the Wave and re-teach the call even for Standard Application. Reason, Dancers facing any direction will join the 6 person Ocean Wave either earlier or later than they did in the Wave when facing the other direction. This should be done on the initial teach session even though the caller may practice them from one position several times.
It may be noted that:
1) This is a Zero or Technical Zero movement. That is they will end the call beside the same person they began the movement with.
2) There is no such call as “Left” Relay the Duecey. The definition states that the center dancer will turn the adjacent dancer to begin the movement. Therefore, it makes no difference if they are in a Right Hand Wave or Left Hand Wave.
3) All turns are done with consecutive hands. That is like, right, left, right, left, etc.
4) Relay the Duecey can be called from facing couples in an 8 Chain Formation.
Dan Koft Writes:
Tell the ends to gently squeeze the hand they are holding. This persaon is your "Buddy", every one check out your "Buddy" so you know who they are. While you are doing this call if you end up on the outside move forward around the outside keeping pace with your "Buddy" When the call is done everyone should end up with their "Buddy" again but at the opposite corner of the square.
